A New Roaster, and a New Experiment

I've been thinking about getting a roaster for quite some time. After a lot of looking around, comparing different options and probably spending more time than I should have watching roasting videos, I finally decided to get the Nucleus LINK.

And now it's sitting at home. 😄

I've been brewing coffee for a few years now, but roasting is something I've mostly been on the other side of. You buy the green coffee, someone else roasts it, and then you spend your time trying to get the best out of it in the cup.

I wanted to change that a little.

I wanted to understand what happens between the green bean and the coffee I eventually drink.

Why the LINK?

I didn't want to jump straight into a large roaster. I mostly want to experiment with different coffees and roast profiles, so a smaller sample roaster made more sense for me.

The LINK also gives me the ability to save and repeat profiles, which is something I'm particularly interested in. I can roast a coffee, taste it, make a change and roast it again.

That's probably where I'm going to spend most of my time initially.

Trying things.

Getting some things wrong.

And hopefully getting a few things right.

I'm especially interested in Indian coffees

There are so many interesting Indian coffees available now that I don't think we've explored them enough.

Naturals, honeys, washed coffees, different varieties and experimental fermentations can all taste completely different.

I'm curious to see how much of that character I can preserve through roasting, rather than roasting everything with the same approach.

So I'll be experimenting quite a bit with Indian green coffees.

And I'll share some of those experiments here — including the ones that don't work. 😄

Coffee of the Month

This is also something I've wanted to do for a while.

Whenever I roast something that I really enjoy, I'd like to share it with people who read this blog.

So I'm starting a small Coffee of the Month release.

I'll select one coffee each month, roast a limited quantity and make it available for anyone who wants to try it.

Nothing too complicated.

If you see a coffee you like, just fill out the order form and I'll get in touch with you.

I'll probably keep these batches fairly small for now. This is still very much an experiment for me, and I'd rather roast a small amount carefully than try to turn it into something much bigger.

So, what's next?

I'll be posting about the coffees I roast, the profiles I'm trying, what I'm tasting and what I'm learning along the way.

I'm sure there will be some bad roasts.

There will probably be a few "what was I thinking?" moments too.

But that's part of why I wanted to get into roasting in the first place.

I've spent a lot of time trying to understand coffee from the brewing side.

Now it's time to see what happens when I start from the other end.

Green bean → roast → brew → cup.

Let's see where this goes.
